Biography

Alastair Thomson has been the CIO of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in the National Institutes of Health, for almost three years and has worked at the agency since February 2010. Thomson has focused on major infrastructure improvement programs including deployment of a multi-petabyte high performance storage system to support research and implementation of several major IT systems to support acquisitions, grants management, reporting and analytics and scientific portfolio analysis using semantic Web technologies. Before coming to federal service, Thomson worked as a consultant where he helped NIH and private sector firms implement technology solutions. Originally from the South Island of New Zealand, Alastair received his BSc (Honours) in Psychology from the University of Otago in 1984 where he developed a computer system for temporospatial analysis of EEG data, followed by a Diploma for Graduates in Computer Science in 1992 with a dissertation on the use of temporal neural networks for the composition of music.
